2008-2009 Literacy Program for 2nd Graders
Families with 2nd graders whose Oral Reading Fluency scores were below proficient were invited to register for the program. A teacher from Belden Elementary was hired to lead the class which met twice each week for 18 weeks. Students enrolled in the program saw their ORF scores jump by an average of 135% compared to the rest of the 2nd graders whose scores increased by an average of only 71%. At the end of the year the students were given a set of books as a reward for their hard work and progress. The hope was that owning their own books would add to their existing interest in reading and carry over into the summer.
